Lucky Monday

I’ve been pretty lucky so far this year. I’ll have to save some of my stories for the book I hope to one day get my head into writing, but I’ll definitely tell you about my lucky Monday from a few weeks ago. I had plans on going out in the morning, but I had a tough time getting moving that day. The clock struck 11am, which is usually a bit too late to go out hunting during a morning pickup, but on this particular route the trash often gets picked up a little later, so I decided to go out anyways.

My first stop was a recently sold house with a fair sized trash pile out front, which from my experience tend to be good spots for finds. One bag from the bin contained two old jewelry boxes, and a couple of other bags held a bit more.

As is most often the case, the boxes had been pillaged before being tossed. However, as is also often the case, there were some treasures left behind for the local trash picker.

For example, this tangled clump of jewelry contained one nice 14k gold chain, and a couple of decent costume pieces.

All in all I saved nearly 12 grams of gold jewelry, which at current melt prices is worth a bit over a grand. That 18k gold tie clip was probably the most valuable piece. I also saved some silver, a few decent watches, and some coins.

Those two silver bracelets were both pretty busted, but they were quite large and hefty, so they were worth about 100$ in scrap. That Swatch is kind of cool, as is the mechanical YSL watch which still runs. Unfortunately, the vintage Timex Snow White watch does not.

It was a nice day, so I decided to go on a downtown adjacent route that tends to get picked up pretty late. I stopped at this unassuming pile, and found just one interesting bag. It held some … personal accessories (I’ll let you use your imagination), as well as a few bits of jewelry.

The highlight there was that top chain, which was branded “Fibo” and hallmarked as 14k gold. The little heart was also 10k gold. The rest, was either silver or gold filled. All in all, the roughly 9.5 grams of gold was worth about 800$.

So, that was a nice morning run! If I could find upwards of 2k worth of trash every day, I’d be a rich man. Unfortunately, it’s not that easy most of the time.

Spring is finally here, and I’m looking forward to university move-out day shenanigans which should keep me busy next week. Here’s hoping the weather cooperates. It would be nice to find another gold score, like the 18k Roberto Coin necklace I found during the festivities two years ago.

Radium

So, it turns out that my watches are radioactive! An eBay buyer told me that his watch was giving off 28usv/h (whatever that means) on his Geiger counter. He said he loved the watch, but that I should probably make sure to store them safely.

The radiation comes from radium paint on the dials which was commonly used for luminescence pre-1960. From what I’ve read, it’s pretty harmless to wear radium watches, but some caution is warranted. It seems like most of the danger comes from opening them up and inhaling paint dust. Another concern is that they can give off radon gas, which is probably the main potential danger here, given that I have about 200 and they are all concentrated in one little box.

Fortunately I’ve kept most of them in a bin in my basement, but I’m thinking that maybe I should store them in a bin outside. Radon is a natural gas (most of it comes from uranium in soil from what I’ve read), and apparently ventilation will take care of most of that issue. It’s just not something you want a lot of in your house.

The more you know!

Otherwise, here’s a few quick finds from the past couple of weeks. This jewelry is the nicest stuff from a batch that was probably tossed by some rich kid. The 2nd chain from the bottom, and the two smaller pieces to the right are all gold. The heart most likely has little diamonds too, though I haven’t tested them. The rest is silver (the gold-toned stuff is gold-plated silver) – that necklace with marcasite is a standout piece.

I’m guessing someone older in the house tossed that Sheaffer Targa fountain pen. It’s marked “AT&T International” and has a nice 14k nib. They seem to sell for around 100$, though the engraving might reduce the value somewhat.

Those folks also tossed a jar full of coins. I was looking to cash them in, but my local Coinstar doesn’t seem to be working. Oh well, no big rush on that front.

Otherwise, here’s a bit more jewelry from a spot not far from home. I was hoping the turtle or the chain would be gold, but those were gold plated silver as well. Silver is good, but gold is more valuable. Regardless, a few nice (Egyptian-inspired) pieces here, and a pile of broken chains and etc for the scrap guy.

And finally, I reached a milestone today. 1000 feedback on eBay! That means a different coloured star, but mostly it’s just a big round number that symbolizes how long (and how successful) I’ve been doing this. I don’t get feedback every time, so I’ve actually sold probably somewhere between 2000-2500 items, most of them in the last decade. That’s a lot of (mostly) garbage!

The bags in the distance pt.2

I’m didn’t do a sale this weekend, for the first time in about two months. I did 13 in that period, and I’m feeling a bit burnt out as you might expect.

Unfortunately I never kept a yard sale journal until this year, so I’m not sure what my normal schedule is. I feel like this year was particularly backloaded, with few productive sales at the beginning (largely due to construction ruining one of my spots – again) forcing me to hustle more in the late summer and fall to unload as much junk as possible, and all at the one spot because of the construction.

I would still like to do one last sale, but at this point in the year weather is a bit sketchy to say the least. It’s supposed to be 20 degrees on Wednesday, so that’s tempting. But a Wednesday sale? It’s unorthodox for sure, but I doubt anyone would mind.

Anyways, here’s the jewelry I found in the bag with the gold coin.

There wasn’t much crap (ie: the cheap stuff you get at the dollar store or wherever, where the plating wears off or the “rhinestones” fall out after wearing it for like a week). Here’s a few standout costume pieces. A lot was signed – D’Orlan, Monet, and etc. The watches, a Butex and a Mortima, aren’t super fancy, but are probably still eBay worthy.

The translucent green bead necklace on the left is made of Bakelite. I’ve never seen that colour before, it’s quite striking. That might make it more valuable that the more common tones, but I haven’t done much research yet. I’m not sure what those other beads are made of. I’m guessing milk glass.

And here’s the precious metals. The pendant with the Arabic script (I think it says something about Allah) is 14k gold, and the lone earring is also gold. Together, they’re worth around 250$ for scrap. The rest is silver, besides that doohickey on the top right. I’m not sure what that is, so I’ll give it to my jeweler to test.

So, that one bag ended up containing over one grand of easily liquidatable junk. Not bad!

I had some luck here and there since, and maybe I’ll post some of those things soon. Still craving a big haul … a van load of junk would be nice!
